A Voice for Ingredient Safety

The Food Ingredient Safety Coalition (FISC) represents a broad section of America’s food, beverage, and ingredient industries. Our members source, manufacture, distribute, and sell safe and wholesome products across the United States.  The safety and quality of what we make is of the highest importance, and we share a commitment to a strong national food safety system.

What We BELIEVE

We believe the best way to ensure our food safety standards remain the highest in the world is to work collaboratively with lawmakers to support a strong federal system utilizing the highest scientific standards.

STRAIGHT TALK:
SAFETY

Food safety decisions should be based on verified scientific evidence and facts rather than unreliable sources.

Consumers nationwide deserve consistent confidence in food safety, while companies need clear regulations to foster innovation and investment.

To help all of us achieve our shared goal of food safety, it is critical that science properly informs policies.

In the absence of a reliable federal safety system, families in America may face limited access to nutritious food options and elevated grocery costs.

Food safety reviews worldwide have found no credible evidence that food colorings and additives cause cancer or hyperactivity in children. There is also no evidence anywhere linking food colors to childhood obesity, morbidity and wellness.

Leadership

Food and beverage companies prioritize safety and quality in support of a robust federal food safety system. The U.S. food system is known for its safety, efficiency, and affordability, and maintaining these standards is essential.

The FDA uses a detailed post-market evaluation of chemicals in food and beverages. Coordination between state and federal policymakers is crucial for maintaining public safety, the integrity of the food supply, and interstate commerce through a consistent, science-based food safety system.

The FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are the federal agencies with the expertise and authority to regulate the safety of our food supply based on rigorous, science-based standards. Both agencies are now reevaluating how food additives are reviewed and approved. Inconsistent state laws only complicate their work.

State Support

State legislation proposed in the U.S. differs significantly regarding scope, ingredients, and enactment dates.

State policymakers, despite their good intentions, may lack the specialized knowledge and global perspective of scientists in Washington and around the world. Hastily enacted state laws can result in confusion, increased costs for shoppers and businesses, and inconsistent standards.

We encourage state legislators to urge Congress to provide the FDA with the necessary funding and resources to accelerate its review of food additives while maintaining the highest scientific standards.
